Factually Jim….its not about not taking a divot….but where you take a divot. If your divot starts before contact with the ball. you are having either setup or spine angle problems. If the divot starts after contact with the ball..you are hitting fine. Like someone else said. no divots with the driver or putter.

its all about the weight shift.
If you take a divot behind the ball then you got to shift your weight to your front foot faster. If you don’t take one at all i think its because you don’t shift at all

when you hear hit through the ball, its how you basically take a divot from in front of the ball as opposed to behind it, try hitting the range and putting a tee about 4-5 inches in front of the ball with the tee head facing the ball and try to drive the ball into the tee it helps, try it

you would always want to take a divot with 12 of your 14 clubs, the 2 you would not want to take a divot would be the putter & driver.

Well, on your short iron shots, you want to hit down on the ball, so you will naturally take some type of a divot. In other shots, you would be hitting flat, or with a driver up, so not take a divot. So if you take a divot on long irons, its about your swing and weight shift, and ball placement too far back in your stance.

    Hi Jim!

Really its not even about the divot. Its more about when the divot that happens that matters the most. If the divot after you actually make contact with the ball then you have no problem at all! In fact thats actually good, but if the divot is occuring before you hit the ball then you have a problem.

So im assuming you are having divot problems before you make contact with the ball.

Im also assuming your using irons here. So to get the crisp impact you need you are going to want to shift your weight to your left side at impact. So try to feel your weight shift to your left leg when you start your downswing. Then you should try to actually strike the ground slightly in front of the ball as compared to what you usually do to correct this.

I hope this was not too vague for you and makes sense. It can be a tricky issue to fix once you have grown into habits of doing it a certain way. I wish you good luck though and remember it takes pratice, you will get better with time :)
